Andrew,
MacLysaght’s “The Surnames of Ireland” says Pinkerton is a Scottish name which
was fairly common in the 6 counties of what is now Northern Ireland by the mid
1600s. It is reportedly listed in Pender’s census of 1659.

I’ve been eagerly looking at all of the Antrim records you’ve been releasing
hoping to find a Pinkerton family, as my Pinkerton ancestor supposedly came
from Antrim county and this is the first I’ve seen with a Pinkerton so I have
my first clue (3 Pinkerton households in Ballymoney townland).
Thanks!
