I can't comment on the legality of doing this yourself, but I will tell
you
how to correct a small error in the baro pressure vs. altitude reading.

On almost all altimeters, just adjacent to the Kolisman window adjustment
knob, there is a small flat blade screw head. Unscrew this until the head
will easily clear the face plate of the instrument. Adjust the knob for
correct field altitude. Pull out on the screw head and slide it sideways
away from the knob (usually left and slightly up). This will unlock the
knob and allow it to be pulled outward toward you. This disconnects the
knob from the moving the altitude reading while allowing it to
independently
adjust the baro reading. Turn the knob and adjust the pressure reading to
current field baro pressure. Then push the knob back in re-locking the
pressure and altitude readings together and then re-lock the knob by
sliding
the screw head toward the knob and screwing back flush with the instrument
face.

It is perfectly normal for the correlation between the pressure and
altitude
readings to become de-sychronized by small amounts. If the altimeter is
and
has been working well, this re-adjustment is harmless and can save you a
lot
of money during your transponder check.

The blind encoder does not have this correlation problem since it provides
pressure altitude only (same as you setting the altimeter to 29.92. It's
output is in steps of 100 ft. The ATC computers add in the differential
for
local pressure (which we all know is ALWAYS accurate). If you maintain
the
correlation on your altimeter, you are less likely to have the excessive
difference in the two which requires a re-calibration.

hello to all
Ihave a altimeter that was tested along with my encoder and transponder it
was
noted that my altimeter was reading 100 or so feet light but within regs
for
VFR
flight I'd like to fix or replace it what is generally the best route
from
all
angles fix or replace either way i'm grounded without it in the plane.
which is
the easiest to do have it removed and fixed or send out to replace.Or
wait
for
oshkosh or something or what. Oh or keep the old one and buy a rebuilt one
or a
new one .What do you'all think is a good route.
