To: [email protected] MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="US-ASCII" Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit X-Mailer: AOL 5.0 for Windows sub 67 List members: Please let me know about Prop Hub failures you have experienced on tapered shaft Contintntal Engines, if any. I remember several instances reported on the list, but do not have reference to them. I am exploring the possibility of the Continental Manual specifying excessive, incorrect torque values. In older Continental Overhaul manuals, Form No. A - C40, 7-63, page 27, Section 6.4, the proper proceedure is to use a 5/8" steel bar and a couple of whacks with a Brass or Lead hammer. Run engine, check track, and recheck for looseness. The Ercoupe Service manual - January, 1947, page 44, gives 1200 inch pounds. (100 Ft Lbs.) My understanding is that a newer version of the Continental Overhaul manual gives 2400 inch pounds. (200 ft lbs.) I believe this is excessive, and forces the hub up the SAE #1 Taper shaft, causing excessive expansion stresses; resulting in failure of the Hubs. I suspect that some one at Continental was mistakenly referencing a splined engine shaft, that does require this high torque, and did not realize they were specifying values for a tapered shaft. I have contacted Continental about the issue, but the response was of little concern about theses old engines.... I will submit a FAA Malfunction/ Defect Report to FAA, when I recieve your responses. We do not need to have these kinds of failures...loosing props, and destroying coupes/pilots, due to a mistake in the specs. Of course, I may be wrong.
