First, level the plane horizontally (left to right) (at rest, on the ground). Is the ball centered? If not, adjust the instrument until it is. Next, go flying. fly at normal cruise, trimmed for level flight. Is the ball centered? If not, apply rudder until it is. Does the plane fly straight? If not, you've got a heavy wing. If so, you need to trim the rudder(s). If the ball is centered, does the plane fly straight? If not, apply aileron until it does. Now the ball's out., right? You need both. Now, let's say you have no rudder pedals. Try this. Does the plane fly straight? If not, apply aileron until it does. Is the ball centered? If so, you've got a heavy wing. If not, try trimming the rudder(s).
