----[Please read http://ercoupers.com/disclaimer.htm before following any advice in this forum.]---- Craig; Ercoupe Service Memorandum No. 41 describes procedures and limits to be observed when overhauling the nose strut and steering collar. Paragraph 3 limits for collar and sleeve inside diameter only allow .003 inch clearance before rejection with the early cylinder (415-34080E). The revised cylinder -34080F. which is slightly larger in diameter, allows up to .010 inch clearance. If you have the double fork, I think you are safe to assume you have the revised cylinder. However, if you have the single fork, I know of no way to tell except to loosen the steering collar and measure the outside diameter of the cylinder. If it is 2.200 inch or larger, you have the revised cylinder. Paragraph 3. (e), (3) states that, if up and down play of collar and sleeve assembly exceeds .002 inch, you are to replace the sleeve spacer washer with a thicker one to reduce the play to less than .002 inch. With all that said, I think if you can see/feel significant play in either direction, you are in need of a nose gear/steering assembly rebuild. Lynn Nelsen
