Mary & Steve,

A straightforward way to troubleshoot the problem is to disconnect the
offending aileron at the "mixer" bellcrank under the rear floor. You can
then readily tell whether the "crick" in the system is in the wing or
the cabin.

There are quite a few places where there could be a hang-up. A rod-end
joint that has been turned before tightening the lock nut, a bad
(cracked) bushing, a too tight chain are all possible causes. The last
person to work on the control system could have used the wrong size
hardware somewhere and it is rubbing. On Alons (and I guess M-10's)
there are ersatz seals in the wing roots that could deteriorate and get
jammed. You kinda hafta open up the floor and touch, watch, and feel
while experiencing the problem - something will jump when it jams. [I
had a similar feeling with a too-tight chain after rebuilding the
control column bushings.]

Until you find out what is wrong, I would consider this a no-fly
situation, because it could get suddenly worse if it is a chain or
hardware problem and permanently jam the system, resulting in loss of
control.
