Dave has a very good solution to this age-old problem. I would not yell fire until I have had a discussion with the firemen. Some pilots are qualified to work with the AP/IA to reduce the number of billing hours. Some are not qualified. The poison in the soup on the owner-assisted annual is that the AP/IA MUST approve YOUR work, since he is signing it off. Most AP/IAs are quite selective in allowing work to be done on the annual inspection by the owner for the reason of liability.
