Hi Leslie,

I agree, Mr. Coillins generally writes well; but in this instance it appears
he has gone overboard on "hanger talk", and not from
experience....Interestingly, this has been happening every since the Ercoupe
was first developed ..  "too easy to fly"; "not a Man's airplane"; Hawks into
sparrows"; "Sissy airplane" ; "I want one that requires my superior skill,
tng, etc.."

Fred Weick designed a wonderful airplane that almost solved the dangers of
flying...no stall/spinn accidents - the cause of most fatalities from
airplane use; but he could not correct for the "loose nut behind the
controls"..

Yes, one can still, hurt oneself and others by not flying the Coupe or any
airplane properly.....too slow and you get behind the power curve; flying in
bad weather; stretching the airplane's weight envelope; performance envelope;
etc..and any airplane will bite back. No inverted flight; loops, etc. -  even
tho structurally the Coupe is stronger than many current airplanes....

I have foolishly flown the Coupe in very windy conditions that I would not
have even attempted in modern airplanes - and gotten away with it. But,
looking back, did I realy need to take off and land in 35- 40 kt winds, 30 to
40 degrees to the runway ? NO, I did not. I did so, foolishly,  just to see
if the coupe could do it. Luckly, the coupe was a better machine that was my
judgement...

It is true many accidents were caused by the same risk taking, that other
airplanes were not subjected to (Pilots knew better).....including flying
around the pattern with the controls strapped back to the stops,
etc....Demonstrations in high winds, etc...

Fly it by the book, and it is still the safest airplane in the field....

Fly Safe - Have fun
