----[Please read http://ercoupers.com/disclaimer.htm before following any advice in this forum.]---- Joe, The best clean-up info I've seen published on this is at http://www.mcafee.com Look in the upper right corner and click on the SirCam warning. It tells about the virus and details the steps to clean it out. The clean-up on this is difficult and you have to edit the registry. Be VERY careful when editing the registry. As soon as you've printed the instructions, please refrain from connecting to the Internet until you've done the first clean-up steps. Be sure you get a virus protection program. My favorite is Norton -- it allows the easiest continuing updates. (You have to have regular updates -- this virus, for example, didn't exist 20 days ago as far as I know.) The last step of the clean-up is to run your virus check to examine the entire computer and you MUST have up-to-date virus signature files or it won't detect this file. I'd recommend you buy Norton and follow their instructions. General rules for avoiding viruses: 1. Never, ever open an attachment unles it's a KNOWN safe kind. I consider .jpg and .gif files to be safe. All others I suspect. 2. Rule 1 applies to messages from strangers and ESPECIALLY to messages from your best, most trusted friends!!!!!! The virus SENDS ITSELF with no help from your trusted friend, after the friend has become a victim. 3. If you receive a file with an attachment that you can't guarantee is safe, dump it immediately HIT DELETE! 4. If the file was from a friend, AFTER YOU'VE DELETED IT, call the friend and ask what they sent. If the file IS something you want, have them send it again. DO NOT trust your friends -- the message may be from the virus on their computer! 5. Buy a high quality anti-virus program, install it and do all the signature updates it recommends. I prefer and recommend Norton Antivirus because I think its signature upate is easiest. Reviews show that programs from the major antivirus companies find all viruses -- if the signature files have been updated recently. Joe, don't feel guilty. You were a victim. You are not a perpetrator. Take care of cleaning out this virus. Not only will it keep infecting others each time you connect to the Internet, it is supposed to wipe your hard drive in, I think, October. WOW, I sure am sorry that this mess came from me. I don't have a clue hoe it started. that geneology message was an email that I received and the virus mest have been attached. I've been getting virus warning ever since and yours was the first that identified me as the culprit that passed it on. If I've got it, how do I get rid of it? I did NOT open the attachment because I spent 2/3rds of my work-day fighting the virus it probably contains. The message is word-for-word the same as is typical with this virus (I had to add spacing and ___ to his message to get it through some virus filter between me and you - the message isn't dangerous but the attachment is.
