I wonder whether the type of carburetor would make a difference in this case. Stromberg versus Marvel. I too , living in CA had only a few occasions of Carb ice in my 300 hours of flying the coupe. They were like described : Loss of power, rough running. One caught me in a elongated steep decent with a closed throttle. The other one reached out for me when circling clouds at an OAT of - 20 Celsius. That was it ! In over 300 hours. And I flew all temperatures, all weathers! Jon's explanation would put a little light into these mysterious events of 'carb Ice' when owners desperately installed Ice detectors, which of course did not detect ice or even freezing conditions in the carb.
