Jimi/Peter,

I didn't see the earlier posting about oil pressure, but I offer these
thouhgts..

If no oil presssure on starting after sitting for a long period, the oil
may have drained from the oil pump, and the pump lost its prime. I think
this can happen this way.

Maybe a quart or so low in the tank. A very tight oil cap. A stopped up
crankcase vent. Now when stopping the hot engine, as the crankcase cools,
a slight vacuum is formed as the air space above the oil level cools and
contracts...sucking oil from the oil pump. This can only happen when the
oil pump cover to gears clearance is too large, allowing the oil to flow
by the gears, back into the oil sump....Now, when the engine is started,
the pump is empty of oil, not primed, and may take 20-30 seconds before
the oil is sucked into the pump and generates pressure.

This is a fairly common problem with these old engines. As the gears wear
the cover, and case, the clearance becomes too great for the oil to stay
in the pump..... especially if the engine is left sitting for a long
period..and may be more likely if using thin oils. I have seen this
happen, but thankfully not in my engine.

The repair if it happens too often is to remove the accessory case, and
rebuild the oil pump cavity, or replace the accessory case.....both fairly
expensive, but necessary.

That's why the Continental Overhaul Manual ; Section VII, Operating
Instructions (Page 28) says: " As soon as Engine starts, adjust the
throttle to obtain approximately 800 RPM, and observe the following
precautions: (a) "Watch the oil pressure guage closely. If no oil
pressure is indicated in 30 seconds stop the engine, and determine the
cause". Etc., Etc..

Hope this helps understand that an oil pressure problem can result, after
letting the engine sit for a long period; but MAY NOT be of serious nature
if the engine is operated on a regular basis and the hot oil pressure is
not below 10 psi at Idle...
