I'm impressed with the set-up that I have. It's a heater out of an RV. It uses a heat exchanger, so no the flames are directed toward the plane, and there are numerous safety devices to protect against mis-haps. I attached flexible insulated 6" duct to the air outlet, and direct it to the engine compartment. It may fit into the "Rube Goldberg" category to you, but it works great, is very safe, and I only have about $50 invested.
