I am a new Ercoupe owner, and need some advice as to how to tackle my oil leakage problem. It appears I have oil leaking between #3 cylinder head through bolt and crankcase, and ofcourse, between the nut and bolt. My research on this problem includes talking with a local A&P expert, and the TCM engine factory. Both seem to come to the same conclusion that there is very possibly something going wrong with the main bearings, which is probably caused they say by a shotty overhaul at the time of the last major by not machining and line boring the crank case halves. According to TCM, this in turn damages the "silk thread" seal in the center of the through bolt (between the crank case halves), causing an unstoppable, unfixable (no quick fix) leak. I have tried putting various high temp sealants under the nut, but no luck. Has anyone out there in the Ercoupe world experienced this problem before, and how do you deal with it. TCM is telling me there is only one solution, and that is tear my engine completely apart, inspect and repair any damage, and reseal. Now that I'm only 400 hours from TBO, if I did that it would only make sense to major the engine again. Can anyone confirm this. Is there any other way to deal with this problem without tearing the engine apart. I have no metal shavings in my oil screen, and the oil leaks out only on one side of the through bolt (#3 cylinder only), so this may be in the preliminary stages, and my main bearings may still be ok. If I do have to major the engine, I want to upgrade to the O-200 STC. Can anyone suggest how I do that, where to purchase the engine, etc. Thank you.
