----[Please read http://ercoupers.com/disclaimer.htm before following any advice in this forum.]---- Jerry,
I don't know whether your problem was vapor-lock or not, could be. However, the first flight after an annual is always something that should be approached with a higher than normal degree of diligence. There is always a chance that something didn't get screwed back together right, something was undone, a safety wire wasn't applied, etc. We've all heard stories of reversed control wires, oil filters coming off, or other problems. They are the stuff of hangar talk, as most mechanics are meticulous in their work and are as careful as if it were their butt in the plane. Things can happen though. You pre-flight, instrument scan, and safety options (the "what-ifs", like the engine failing to produce power just after take-off as in your experience) should be attuned to this possibility on this "maintenance test flight" after annual, or other maintenance.
