I don't know whether your problem was vapor-lock or not, could be.
However, the first flight after an annual is always something that should
be approached with a higher than normal degree of diligence.  There is
always a chance that something didn't get screwed back together right,
something was undone, a safety wire wasn't applied, etc.  We've all heard
stories of reversed control wires, oil filters coming off, or other
problems.  They are the stuff of hangar talk, as most mechanics are
meticulous in their work and are as careful as if it were their butt in
the plane.  Things can happen though.  You pre-flight, instrument scan,
and safety options (the "what-ifs", like the engine failing to produce
power just after take-off as in your experience) should be attuned to this
possibility on this "maintenance test flight" after annual, or other
maintenance.
