Steve,
Don't forget to ask the owner to take you up for a half-hour demo ride.
If
he/she balks at the request, you should balk at buying the plane.  If the
owner doesn't live too far away, ask him/her to fly it to your nearest
airport so you can go for the demo ride.  Offer to pay the fuel.
