Ken:

I have been looking for a way to put shoulder harnesses in my Alon as
well.

++ Problem #1 is that there is no STCed installation. Therefore, you must
come
up with a field solution which will pass FAA muster via a 337.

++ Problem #2 is that there is no place other than the skin to attach
belts
which meets the methods shown in AC 43-11. There just aren't any
structural
members at the top of the fuselage. Some type of doubler plate (with lots
of
rivets) outside the skin is needed for adequate strength.

Some of the 337 form drawings (with which others obtained approval) I
procured
look absolutely dangerous to me. My IA said he would not sign them off in
my
plane and he is sure the local (San Jose) FAA would not sign them off
either. I
won't put something on my plane which only looks good, but has an
incorrect
belt angle or won't stand as much force as the seat belt system does.

The 337 copy that looked like a real neat idea used a welded stainless
steel
interior plate and an eyebolt to secure the belt ends. On the outside of
the
skin, they used hardware-store metal handles as backup plates which also
serve
as boarding handles. The only problem with this setup is that there are
only
four small bolts plus a pretty small area on the handle to secure the
interior
plate to the skin. I'm thinking of either machining a special handle or
mounting a doubler plate under the handle on the exterior and securing it
(through the skin) to the inner plate with lots of rivets; if it's shiny
stainless steel, it may not look too bad.

Has anyone out there seen any installations which:
++ mount the belt at the correct angle
++ follow AC 43-11
++ and also look good?
