I wouldn't put something on that was obviously non-original, but coming
from
a family of Cub owners and going to the Lompoc fly-in every year, I see
this
stuff all the time. I don't know anyone who actually has a factory-made
cork
float. In fact, in the Cub Clues newsletter, one of the favorite topics
is
the latest "find" in cork float sealing materials. If I needed a new
cork, I
wouldn't hesitate to use something that others have tried and proven. I
would be very careful though, keeping an eye on it for any signs of
deterioration. That's easier in the Cub, since you take the cap off every
time you put gas in. You'd have to remember to do it in the Ercoupe if
you
don't fill the fuselage tank.

It's funny to look at the Cubs lined up at Lompoc. There are several
items
on the planes that are never factory-original. The window latch, for one
-
there are no two alike, practically. Every one is the owner's individual
solution for keeping the window latched to the wing.

>Is this an STC fix for a certified a/c?
Maybe he can get a field approval :-)

>Other than wondering what\how paint thinner got in gasoline, I wonder
>what the FAA thinks of this float fix....
>Especially if it associated with the cause of a crash.
>Then, I wonder if the insurance company will pay off.
>Some folks don't solder very well or know what kind of solder to use.
>I find this kind of knowledge very scary; maybe reckless?
