        You have a leak in your static system.  That's the only way the
airspeed indicator will read higher with the canopy open.  Once I was
having a transponer and encoder put into my Coupe at an avionics shop
and had to depart due to threat of bad weather before they were
completely done.  When I left I opened up the canopy which gave me an
instantanious 40 mph(!) increase in airspeed.  I called them after I got
home and they said they left the static tube disconnected, but would
connect it when I returned.  I told them about the airspeed and they
said it would only do that if my cockpit leaked.  I said yes, it really
leaks whenever I fly with the canopy open.  They didn't know people did
that.
