Hello Coupers:

We are having trouble with the carb heat on our 415C C85. On runup, the carbheat can be applied to its stop, and we get a good RPM drop. But in flight, when carbheat is applied, I can only get the carbheat to pull back about half of what it does on the ground. This happened again to me last night, and several tries failed to gain full carbheat.

We have tried to lubricate the cable, but this did not help. Anyone else have similar trouble? Any help would be greatly appreciated, as not being able to apply full carb heat does not make me a happy couper.

Jeff,
Been there done that,,,,,,, the problem in my case is that there was enough wear on the shaft that the butterfly flap rotates on that in flight with more airflow it was binding up. It was fine on the ground even at high RPM. You might be able to duplicate the problem if you run up to full static RPM then try to pull on the carb heat. If that duplicates the problem leave the carb heat in what ever position it hangs up in and shut down the engine. Check the butterfly if it moves freely now you can remove the air filter and try to apply even pressure to the butterfly and see if it hangs up again. Check the shaft for play. This may or may not be your problem but was for me. Doesn't cost anything to check
