To anyone who has disassembled an Alon nosegear:

I had some hydraulic fluid leakage caused by pitting of the plating of
the inner cylinder of my Alon's nosegear, so I disassembled it. During
the disassembly, a few questions arose because the Service Manuals don't
explain and the Parts Manuals pictures are not clear. Can anyone who
has seen the insides help with some advice?

(1) The lowest item on the inner rod appears to be a valve. It is
mounted to the rod with a bolt and elastic stop nut. It appears that
the hole in the rod is elongated to permit the valve to slide
up-and-down and uncover a hole; this would provide different fluid flow
and action on the up and down strokes. When I disassembled the
mechanism, this bolt was very tight, preventing movement of the valve.
Am I correct that the bolt only secures the valve and it should move
freely?

(2) I've elected to not remove the fork from the inner cylinder and to
have the cylinder re-plated (yes, it can be done). After soaking in
solvent for an hour, the "taxi spring" is still inside the cylinder and
doesn't want to come out. Is it fastened inside in some way I can't
see? Does the nut on the bottom of the fork just provide a secondary
means of holding the fork to the cylinder?

(3) In addition to the hydraulic fluid, there was a _lot_ of grease in
various parts of the nosegear interior. Was this probably just a means
some previous owner used to "fix" the hydraulic fluid leak?

Thanks for taking the time to read and answer. This is my first
complete annual and it's kinda tough to work on a new machine without
some expert guidance.
