I think the reason we used to start using the left mag was that
the left
mag was an impulse mag that made hand propping easier because the mag
would
wind up and then snap over at a faster speed, similar to when an electric
starter is used.
My Coupe has left and right impulse mags. However impulse mags are
not as
necessary with electric starters. When using electric starters both mags
should be switched on for starting and running and only switched to one
mag
at a time for the pre flight mag check.
I know this from my days flying my "hand prop" Aeronca Champ which
only
had an impulse mag on the left and that is the one I switched to for hand
