Subject: owner concerns

New to mailing list for past month. Enjoy what I am reading.Did ask
about an 0-200 conversion and got a lot of good response.Went out and
bought a printer so I could keep the info.Read about lack of response to
mailing list about ideas,my reason is it takes me forever to type out a
message with my hunt and peck style of typing.Read a lot topics with
different opinions stated.Would like to state mine now.
1.fuel related problems-mogas related probably.(I am a master ASE
certified auto mechanic for 25 years now so I should know a little about
this matter.)Why would any one that enjoys ownership and flying ever
want to jeperdize this privlige by endangering themselves by using this
substandard fuel for aircraft use,is it the cost difference.Pitty to
lose a life and a fine craft over a few pennies.Auto fuel is blended
differently in winter than in the summer and if you have your own
storage tank and have winter fuel in it and are using it in the summer
you will most definetly have a vapor lock especially at higher altitudes
where the boiling point is lower. This fuel was designed for ground
traveling vehicles that can pull off the road when they have problems &
they do have problems.Futher more auto fuel cannot be stored for several
monthes and maintain its quality level like avaition fuel can.(Try
starting your lawnmower in the spring without putting fresh gas in
it,smells like paint thinner.)Also will leave a dry/tacky residue in the
bottom of your carb. and fuel tanks when it evaporates, big time problems
leading to carb. fuel & air jet blockages and debri floating around in
your fuel tank when it comes loose.Nice thing to look forward to just to
save a few pennies. 2.Talk on
landing speeds?????? Why would any one want to approach the runway @
minimum speeds 60mph.What would happen if your engine stopped (auto
fuel??) or if the wind shifted suddenly? You would land short of the
runway. What an embarrassing and expensive learing experience.I don't
know about anybody else but I love my coupe. We don't have the option of
flaps to adjust for different landing speeds so lets keep it safe &
consistant.Good landing approach should be your best glide speed nose
down aditude pick spot on runway to touch down, once you are sure you
have runway made for power off situation cut throttle back to idle &
maintain same aditude. Your speed will slowly fall,if you think you are
falling short of the runway just add a little power then return to idle.
As to what IAS you are doing when you flair out & touch down at is your
least concern because your eyes should be on the runway and not your
instrument panel.Remember that a plane cannot stall in a nose down
aditude so keep it that way till you flair out.If you are at 80mph when
you throttle back to idle you should be around 70 mph on flair out.
Realize that the ercoupe is a very forgiving craft for a lot of novice
pilots to enjoy so why push it to its limits and chance getting into
trouble.
Fly safe always & forever have fun.
