I have the El-Reno Spin On oil filter conversion and I think that it is great but I would like to warn you of a possible problem. This modification was done by a previous owner before I bought the A/C so I assumed that it had been done correctly and flew it that way for several years.
When the Spin On Filter is installed it is optional to remove the old
engine
oil screen and remove the screen part and then reinstall the brass plug
that
the temperature bulb fits into. This will let the Spin On Filter do all of
the
work and I would have thought that most people would have done it that
way.
The purpose of the Spin On Filter, I figured,
was to eliminate the messy job of removeing the old style screen and to
make
things quicker, cleaner, better filtration and easier.
Anyway one day just for grins I thought why not check the old screen
that
should have been removed, I thought, and see if there was anything in
there.
There was -- THE OLD SCREEN HAD NOT BEEN REMOVED!!!! It was in there and
everything that it had filtered out of the oil for who knows how long was
in
there too. It looked like mud except that it was carbon and other stuff
that
normally gets taken out of the engine by this screen. Fortunately a magnet
would not remove and metal particles and I don't think that it had done
any
damage but It sure would have sooner or later. I inspected it as much as I
could and put as much of the crud and black mud as I could scoop out in a
sterile container and still have it on my work bench.
If you have gotten this far and you are looking for a moral to this
story,
here it is. Evidently the oil is filtered through this old screen before
it
ever gets to the new Spin On Filter and if it is left in the engine then
THE
OLD SCREEN SHOULD STILL BE REMOVED AND CLEANED AT EACH OIL CHANGE if it
was
not removed when the new filter was installed. This was spelled out in the
directions that came with the Spin On Filter but could be easily over
looked
or forgotten.
I will bet that my engine is not the only one that had or has this
problem.
Check yours, you might get a big suprise!
