They were on the plane when the owner bought it, about a year later he removed them. There was no difference in the speed or the way it handled, either at cruise or low speed. The M-10 will stall and the stall speed was also unaffected by the removal of the gap seals.
A mod I have always wanted to make would be to change the ailerons to flaperons. I an less interested in the actual low speed end of it as the potential ability to reflex the flaps in cruise to reduce drag. High performance sailplanes and the Maule do this to get a few more knots of cruise speed. With a full span aileron to use it should be fairly effective.
