First, let me say there was an excelent article on this subject in Light 
Plane Maintenance within the past year or so.

Next, let me say that the exact location depends on your specific
airframe.  
In general, however, you generally want it to be somewhere below the
bottom 
edge of the firewall but not below the bottom of the cowl, as that puts it
in 
the slipstream which will create a vacuum on the tube and help draw the
oil 
out.  

One trick that seems to help alot is to route the tube over the top of the

cylinders before going down toward the firewall.  This gives a few inches
of 
slope back toward the crankcase to aid any oil in the line to find its way

back.  The previously mentioned extension to the fitting helps too as it 
prevents oil from following the surface of the case to the inlet to the
vent 
line.
