Well I'm still hot on the trail of the perfect leakproof carb
needle:)
(just yell when you want me to stop talking about it!)
The latest guy I spoke with overhauls carbs for a living and does a
couple Strombergs a month (this is verified by his supplier which is
the company that gave me his name and number.)
Anyway, what he does is get a steel needle and a *new* matching seat
(says you can't re-use the old seats) and he puts the needle in his
lathe and *very lightly* uses 600 grit emery cloth to polish the
surface. He also mounts the brass seat in a collet and does the same
thing. As a final step he uses a light abrasive paste (similar to
denture cream) to finish seating the needle. He said not to use a
valve grinding compound since it very quickly forms a ridge in the
seat which can leak. Apparently he has very good luck with this
method and very few leak. Sounds reasonable anyway.
