As strange as it may sound, Rutan's aviation doctor lives right here in Humboldt County in the city of Fortuna. Consequently, our low population, out of the way area gets to hear the famous Dick Rutan occasionally speak. Yesterday was a local aviation conference. The weather was lousy for flying so it was a good day to be inside. I hoped that every pilot in our county and maybe some from the adjoining counties would be there, but they weren't. Well, they certainly missed some good talks. Rutan spoke about and showed us his video of his latest adventure, the flight last year to the North Pole in an Russian, but Polish built An-2. Maybe the world's largest biplane? I'm not certain about that. Anyway, it's a jumbo. Why he and the other adventurers picked that plane wasn't clear to me. It was a great story and Dick is fun to listen to. Unfortunately, they landed on some ice which was too thin for the An-2. ended up losing the plane, and the crew had to rescued. No one was hurt.
