After reading what everyone said about O rings I determined that a plain Jane O ring would suffice and if it did swell up and leak again I would then get a Viton ring and replace it again. I headed out to the plane with a selection and removed the plunger from my Lunkheimer primer. Guess what?? NO O rings--none. It has no internal O rings like some other primers I've looked at. The only seal is a circular packing similar in design to that which is used to pack pumps in industry. It looked like a graphite material. This seal is under a gland nut at the knob end. I hastily and carefully replaced it and tightened up on the gland nut. The plunger looked pretty worn so I'll look for a more modern primer I think.
