The reason the oil is high on your dipstick when cold is this:  when you
start and run the engine, the oil level goes down in the oil tank to a
point where it is below the bottom of the filler tube.  When the engine
is shut down, the oil drains back, covering the filler tube bottom.  At
this time the air in the tube is hot.  As the air cools down in the
tube, it shrinks and sucks the oil up to a higher level.  This only
happens if your oil cap seals well, as it should.  To prove this theory,
as soon as you stop the engine, loosen your oil cap and leave it that
way.  Next day your oil level will read correctly when the dipstick is
removed.  I'm afraid capillary action doesn't enter into this one.  My
plane does the same thing and I have experimented with it.  Try it and
see.
