I've got to agree with some of the comments about why this happens.  We
seem
to attract low-time pilots and some afraid to fly more complex planes.  We
also attract some who want CHEAP and who therefore do insufficient
maintenance.

I think the plane design is actually pretty good.  About 10 years ago, a
magazine did a safety comparison of all models.  The Cessna 182 was top
for
safety.  The Coupe was had a low level of fatalities but a high level of
"stall" (really mushing into the ground) accidents from which the pilots
walked away -- but it brought down our safety record.  We hit about the
middle of the pack of '60s and '70s designs in overall safety.

I'd say it's a safe plane.  It won't bite you.  Do watch out for high sink
at low approach speed and remember that's true of all the other
Hershey-bar
wing planes of the era (Short-wing pipers, early Cherokee, others).  Also
know, we get a tolerable glide ratio at a higher airspeed.
