I've got to agree with some of the comments about why this happens. We seem to attract low-time pilots and some afraid to fly more complex planes. We also attract some who want CHEAP and who therefore do insufficient maintenance. I think the plane design is actually pretty good. About 10 years ago, a magazine did a safety comparison of all models. The Cessna 182 was top for safety. The Coupe was had a low level of fatalities but a high level of "stall" (really mushing into the ground) accidents from which the pilots walked away -- but it brought down our safety record. We hit about the middle of the pack of '60s and '70s designs in overall safety. I'd say it's a safe plane. It won't bite you. Do watch out for high sink at low approach speed and remember that's true of all the other Hershey-bar wing planes of the era (Short-wing pipers, early Cherokee, others). Also know, we get a tolerable glide ratio at a higher airspeed.
