As I recall, John Wright, Sr., found a wing with serious corrosion on an in-license aircraft that had been actively flying. The corrosion was serious but had not been found by any previous annual inspections. This culminated a period in which he had been trying to get a usable wing and every wing he got, for sale as ready to install, had dangerous levels of corrosion. After finding the corroded wing on a flying airplane, he took the batch of stuff to the FAA and they insisted we shed some light on the subject. I thank John for doing it. I'm sure that without his action, I would not be able to say what I can say now: I don't know of any Coupe lost in flight from corrosion causing an accident. Unfortunately, a fair number of poorly maintained Coupes have been lost on the inspection shop floor. <sigh> Better there than in flight, for sure. When I bought my plane there were two for-sale Coupes on the field. One with a low time engine but airframe corrosion. The other with a high time engine but no corrosion. I chose the airframe with no corrosion and paid for a major overhaul four years later. Now, 22 years later, I still have a Coupe with no corrosion. To keep it that way, I've kept it hangared for virtually all the 22 years. Thank heavens I hate big cities. Enclosed hangar here is $65/month. Buyer beware and buyer INSPECT!!! Trust but VERIFY!!!
