This accident took place at the Kingman, Arizona airport.  The Ercoupe was
landing and the conditions were windy with moderate to extreme turbulence.
The accident investigation revealed severe corrosion of the left wing rear
spar attachment hinge which failed in flight causing loss of control of the
aircraft.  Metalurgists found the hinge to be cracked due to dissimilar metal
corrosion and exfoliation was present.  Several rivets that secured the steel
hinge to the aluminum sheet had their heads popped off from corrosion which
also contributed to the failure.  These hinges on the rear spar cannot be
adequately inspected through the AD holes in the wing.  The rivet heads face
away from the inspection holes and the corrosion is between the layers of
steel and aluminum.  The final report and full narrative are important
reading for us.  Go to: ntsb.gov/NTSB/brief.asp?ev_id=20001205
