----[Please read http://ercoupers.com/disclaimer.htm before following any advice in this forum.]----The inspection of the spar caps is usually done through the AD holes with a
mirror and flashlight. If intergranular corrosion has broken through it is
easily seen. If not, it is necessary to run your finger along the channel on
each side of the top and bottom caps, front and rear to "feel" for rises,
bumps or blisters. These indicate the corrosion is about to break through.
They cannot be seen visually, however. Look for missing rivet heads along
the spar web where the web is riveted to the caps and where the nose ribs and
diagonal ribs are riveted to the web. The best method of inspection is to
use the flexible bore scope with camera and light. There are a few areas of
the spar caps that are very hard to see or feel. Most of the corrosion is
found in the bottom rear channel of the spar cap. It can and does occur in
all other areas of the spar cap also.
