If you have the leg extended [by removing the rubber stopper]
enough to let you get the cylinder full up to the filler hole, that's
all you need. The oil stays at that level and the piston moves up and
down in it. The O-ring stops it from escaping. It also stops you from
filling the strut if the leg is not extended enough to uncover the
filler hole. I found that gear oil gives a much better damping action on
hard landings. It's not hydraulic oil, but it only moves each way once
on take off and landing. If you're losing oil out of your strut, the
O-ring needs to be replaced. Hope this helps.
