"Coupers." I lost an old friend last night! I'm gonna get kind of serious, so if you don't want to read this, I'll understand. Yea, I really did loose an old friend last night, we have been close for sixty years. Sixty years! We played hide and go seek together as kids. We used to pester the neighborhood girls together. We went to school together. We belonged to the same Clubs, together. We flew together. Artie crashed first, he lost a propeller blade on a Stearman Duster, pulling up at the end of a long run to get over some Eucalyptus trees. The engine came off the airframe in midair but the safety chain held and Artie managed to control the crash. He broke 17 bones, had a concussion, and damned near bit his tongue off, but he lived through it. That was 15 years ago. We didn't do that together. 10 years ago today I crashed with my first Ercoupe N99893, the "Russian Coupe." We didn't do that together either. But we did go to Oshkosh together two years ago, and we had a good time, a really good time. Artie had never been to Oshkosh before, although he had been a pilot all his life. 22,000 hours in a Stearman. He was like a kid checking out the Ultralites. He stopped by the hangar one day last week and we chatted kinda mindlessly, he gave me with a new book to look at and he left to let his dogs run. Artie shot himself yesterday in a Supermarket parking lot. It was so unlike him that its hard to believe it. Artie was 69. No services. No nothing. Did I say Goodby, and did I mean it? Life is too damned short, you guys with airplanes.. Fly them!! Fly the pants off of them. Live Life the best way you know how, cause in a flick of a minute it can be gone, really gone. And wouldn't it be the shits to come to the end of your life, and look back and find out you really didn't LIVE it! Have fun and love somebody!!
