When I was just a 'wee tyke' my dad used to land his plane on hiway 99 and taxi up to the gas pump in front of his motorcycle shop and fill his plane with 'ethel' at (get this) $0.09 per gallon.
Of course back then there were only a few cars per day that travelled that hiway.
I think it would be fun to get several farmers or ranchers in the area that have lots of flat ground to get together and form a 'BBQ Club' and each weekend they could all fly to one of the 'sod strips' and have a BBQ. And of course they could invite other coupers (those poor 'city fellers') to come and join in the fun. Who says 'fly-ins' have to be held at airports?????
(We used to do things like this in the 'olden days', so why not now?)

Though I was tempted yesterday driving back from Austin. I found a real nice
BBQ place on 290 just before Elgin. Plenty of open road and enough parking to
swing a coupe around. No wires across the road. Ideal setting.
