I'll second this suggestion. I rented a C172 a couple years ago to fly to
Minnesota. I didn't "bother"
to check the landing light before I left. (Stupid, stupid, stupid!!)
Mostly because I didn't think of it
but also because I figured I'd be back long before night fall.

You know what the say about "the best laid plans of mice and men"?

Well I didn't get back until almost midnight. And, you guessed it, the
light was not working when
I reached home. I managed to get it down without any trouble but, being as
this was only my
second night time flight, I was concerned. Fortunately it was a pretty
bright night out.

Even if you have one, get comfortable with the idea of landing without it.
Once it burns out, you may not have enough fuel to stay airborne until
dawn.
