Fellow coupers- I wrote a comment to the proposal of the new wing A.D. yesterday and emailed it to the guy in D.C. who's in charge of it. (I forget his name...) Anyway I tried to communicate 2 ideas to him: 1. that when I was restoring my coupe I could see this rear spar pretty good with the wings off the coupe, and everything pulled out of the interior. It takes a bit of contortionism in the interior but you can get a light an a mirror in there and see most of the area. Most of that spar is visible through the holes in the wing stub rib with a flashlight and mirror. It is kinda hard to see the rear of the spar through there. I suggested to him that most Ercoupe owners would do anything, including pulling their wings off and inspecting; rather than cutting more holes in their planes. 2. that I believe bad center sections are becoming a thing of the past, and this particular plane represents more of an isolated case. In the 70's and 80's when nobody wanted an Ercoupe they sat and were neglected. Today, the Coupe enjoys a certain cult following and they are cared for with more attention. I have owned 2, restored 1 and done annuals on several coupes- NONE of them had rear spar corrosion like the E model described in the proposal. My final point was that the Ercoupe community will take special notice of this area and direct our IA's to do more thorough inspections; but we want to do so of our own choice and not under the duress of a forced inspection/modification as a result of an A.D.
