This is one of the few subjects on which I CHOOSE to be a fanatic.

Like seat belts and smoking. Fortunately, I was a seat belt fanatic
before hitting the guard rail at 55 mph. And my dad died horribly,
painfully, over 3/4 of a year from lung cancer.

When I learned to fly, my instructor told me to do the prop rotating to
loosen things up and check compression as if I were trying to start the
engine. With the full leg swing whose momentum carries me back and out,
just in case.

Shortly after my instructor told me this, an airport visitor told about
the time an Ercoupe owner at the next grass field over had chopped his
friend up into hamburger. Though it had been several years, it was
still ruining the former Coupe owner's life and the lives of his
deceased friend's family.

Sometimes fanaticism is a good deliberate choice. Every prop swinger
should be FULLY PREPARED for an engine start with power on.
