Jolly, Just to follow up, Ted stated that he was an A & P, and I myself am an IA. I did state that log entries had to be made; however like FAR 43 appendix A says, any alteration listed on the type certificate is not a major, this includes the annotation on the data plate.
I deal with the FAA on a daily basis, being an A & P instructor, Designated Mechanic Examiner and IA, and some of them in the same office will differ over "interpretation and application" of the FARs. There can be differences of opinion from local FISDO offices as to the applicability of 337 forms. As long as you are clearly following the FARs then you are in the clear. My only intention was to inform Ted that he need not make unnecessary trips to the FISDO.
