John, that pretty much as I was told to do it by Dad. With my Alon I use

1/2 a shot while turn over the engine. 
  If one looks at the primer tube going into the side of the spider web 
(manifold), they will see how it would run down into the air box.  
  Also if you get a back fire keep turning the engine over. That sucks the

fire into the engine. And unless your really flooded the gas should burn
off 
quickly. This was common in older cars. And hold true in aircraft as well.
