Speaking about leaking carbs, after I purchased my Coupe, I noticed the
carb was leaking. It was just a little drip, but once when I forgot to
shut off the header valve, it all dripped out overnight. Boy was I
bummed. As I was getting the tank and other things fixed, I decided to
fix the carb. It was removed and sent in for a professional overhaul.
What they found was that the carb was just full of crud. Now, I don't
know if that crud could have caused any real problems, but it certainly
wasn't doing any good. I have no doubt the engine wasn't running quite
right, as it had a tendency to die at the wrong times. Bottom line is:
It cost $175.00 to have the thing overhauled (plus removal and
re-installation). Now it don't leak, and the engine purrs like a
kitten. Well worth it for the peace of mind.
Now, I'm hearing all this discussion about oil leaks. And, yes I've
added to the discussion with my comments about the Pepsi/Bud can cure.
But, my Coupe don't leak, and it doesn't blow oil. The Pepsi can is
there, but I've never had to empty it. The engine consumes about one
quart for each 8-10 hours of use. It don't matter what RPM I run, it
doesn't blow it out. The problem here is that small leaks have a
tendency to become large leaks. I had a Diesel truck once that had a
small leak. I ignored it, and one day while doing about 60 MPH down the
freeway, it took a dump. Blew the engine, and ended up on the side of
the road. I don't think that's what I'd like my Coupe to do, as the
landing could be a little bumpy.
