Warren; I looked at the subject Coupe, Serial # 1941, today. Jay said that
he
had sent you pictures, but unless he took close up ones, they will be
misleading. From 50 feet away, it looks like a decent Coupe.
However, there is major corrosion every surface. You can just about see
the
Atlantic Ocean from the airport, and this Coupe looks like it has spent
its
whole life there. Here is a brief list from a 15 minute walk around:
Every surface has corrosion making white powder from aluminum, or
worse.
No log books available, and no one knows where they are
Left fuselage to wing fairing rotted through just behind the rear
spar,
the hole is about 8 inches in diameter.
Both ailerons rotted to the point that the fittings have become
disconnected from the control rods, major holes.
Left wing front, top spar cap bulged up 1/4" over a 8 " distance just
outside the wing to center section bolt
Right front center section top spar cap bulged up over a 12" distance
Engine crankshaft flange major rust. I seriously doubt that it will be
salvageable.
Nose gear strut badly rusted, unusable
Nose gear scissors corroded and broken in two just behind the nose
gear
Both main fuel tanks show corrosion blisters inside and out
Left wing tip navigation light missing, tip damaged
8 rivets in a row have heads popped off and skin is lifted on top of
front spar cap on right wing
Cleveland brake disks rusted beyond belief.
Engine can be forced to turn, but it is not easy. I would expect very
few
parts to be useable.
I did not open the aircraft to check internal corrosion, but seeing the
outside makes be believe that the inside will be just as bad. This Coupe
is
not economically repairable. Unfortunately is shows the signs of neglect
for
too many years next to the ocean, tied down outside.
I had hoped to be able to come up with some significant $$ for the Fred
Wieck
Scholarship Fund, but I doubt that you could even give it to a salvage
yard.
They would lose money trying to find a good part.
