Andy, beware YES 99371 was doing a lot, had been for months. The taper
is
hollow inside and the wells are not thick. When NTSB took the crank they
found a hair line crack. It was beat on by the twisting as the prop left
the
Coupe. Of three Ercoupes that I know of that crank broke in flight all
were
tapered. And all with metal props. One on the East coast had been
Overhauled
not to many hour before. But the shop missed the crack.
I had been noticing what seem to be more vibs. Had removed prop check
this and that. Sat up a test to see the tips of prop were running true.
Talk
to my A & P brother a lot of times. Did motor mounts. Was through annual
all
that stuff. While flying in rising terra firma applied power. The dam
thing
was really going at it. Pulled power off and it was over. "EGC" 800 ft is
not
much time.
I am not trying to worry anyone just want you to know tapered crank canand some times do break. If your engine is doing a lot of Vibs in all ranges check it out the best you can. The two times engines fail are power up and power back. The prop wanted to turn and I told the engine to slow. that over loaded the shaft.
