Don't forget, these planes don't have any sophisticated vapor recovery 
canister like a car does today.  I think people have forgotten (or aren't
old 
enough to remember) how often tthey used to smell fuel vapors.  If the 
temperature goes up, vapors are forced out of the tank vents.  If it stays

the same or goes down, you won't smell anything.
