Bulb life has not been a problem. I bought a spare bulb some years ago and never used it.
1. Two 250 watt bulbs is much more than my 15 amp generator can deal with. The battery can support the load for a night landing but there is no way I can leave even one on in a high traffic area. 2. The lamps poke two big holes in the nose bowl which vents directly to the low pressure side of the engine cooling air. Any air leaks at this point cause that much less air to be available to cool the engine. The openings are reasonably well sealed up now but they haven't always been that way. 3. The lamp housings have made a few problems servicing the engine although this is not the main reason that I wish they were not there. As with everything in life, there is no simple right or wrong. I would be happier with one lamp of a smaller size for the amount of night flight that I do.
