What I REALLY will never understand what also happens to some of those airplane. At an airport close to me there are the remains of what was once a beautiful Cessna 140, that some guy had spent a fortune on. Unable to get his price, he allowed it to set and just disinigrate into a hulk. One of the first Ercoupes I ever got to examine closely was in the same state, and the guy had just had the engine completely rebuilt before parking it in a field to rot away.
I don't know why someone would allow this to happen, except out of bitterness. The last I heard, the guy still wanted $18,000 for the 140 with it's wings in tatters, windshield busted, interior rotted, and instruments stolen. It seems just donating the airplane would have recovered more value.
