Lesson #2

PREFACE

Recently Greg Bullough wisely suggested that I purchase Richard Bach's "A
Gift of Wings". Although I have always enjoyed and been inspired by Bach's
books, I hadn't read this particular one as yet. Now is the perfect time
for me to read it. The second essay, "People Who Fly", addressed my
fundamental question: "Why do I want to do this?" The most concise and
truthful answer my mind and my heart came up with is: "Because I love it."
Well, that doesn't at all satisfy my practical, rational self; the self
that is always worried about paying the bills; the self that thinks I have
to have a logical and defensible argument for everything I do.

I have some friends whom I'm positive won't understand. I have not told
them about the new, wonderful world I have discovered. I sense that they
will try to discourage me, recite statistics, convince me to "come back
down to earth". I don't need these people raining on my parade right now.
I will tell them eventually, when I'm much stronger and more experienced
as a pilot.

I have some close friends who are behind me all the way and I am grateful
for them. I have the support, encouragement, and understanding of all you
fine folks. I have certainty in that I don't have to explain or defend my
desire to learn to fly to you.

Many of you advised me to take my lessons as close together as possible
for maximum benefit and minimal cost. I know that you are correct.
However, after the Intro Lesson, I was hooked. There was no going back.
I won't be able to wait until I save enough money to take my lessons all
in a row. So, until my income increases, I will be pinching and scraping
to get that next lesson. I found out last night that my instructor did it
the same way. I'm sorry he had to struggle but it does give him a level
of understanding of us "financially challenged" students that he might not
have had otherwise.
