I survived! So did my wallet!

I'd thought that the shop at N85 was going to do my annual. Then several
annuals
he had ahead of me turned into 'new engine.' Not good for the schedule.
And
the weather
didn't cooperate to let him work as fast as he could last (dry) year.

So suddenly, I found myself with the annual due March 31, and no prospect
of getting
in until the end of April. Started calling around desperately, and found
Carl at N51 who
was actually EAGER to do it! He was busy, but likes Ercoupes a lot.

There was a bit of a worry on this one, because the starter clutch bushing

perished
shortly after I bought the plane and on the first oil change we found
shards of bronze
in the 'elephant catcher' and a ton of bronze flakes in the spin-on. Not a

good sign.
We replaced that, but were still worried as the shaft it turns on was not

particularly
smooth. So it was with some trepidation that, 15 running hours later, we
sliced open
the filter and looked at the screen.

Joy! The screen was clean and the filter just had some few little golden
twinkles. That
was as expected; leftovers were a certainty in such a case. But there
weren't many.
I can't imagine why someone wouldn't get a spin-on oil filter to protect
these $12,000
engines!

I had about five squawks, and Carl found several more, like four plugs at
the end
of their life cycle, but nothing that wasn't really just routine. By the
way, he said
I saved myself a bundle by having all the logs in order, in a case, in
files, and
every 337 in a file, and every applicable AD printed out, and the results
of past
AD searches all collated, plus the result of my own search WITH the due
dates
and hours ready to go.

Five days of working on it half time, and all was done, I was no longer
worrying about
a bronze-fest in the engine, and the Spring weather and blue skies are
just
around
the corner.

I said BLUE SKIES ARE JUST AROUND THE CORNER.

Okay, dammit, somebody cue the blue skies.

F***ing stationary front.
