Coupers, here's a reply I received from Sigtronics concerning low volume level through their portable intercom systems.  Thought you'd be interested in knowing what the pro's have to say about the problem.

From Sigtronics:
Your SPO-22 may not have an amplified auxiliary input. If your intercom
is older than S/N 2318298, you will experience what you are describing.
Prior to this time, portable CD players had sufficient power to drive
aviation headsets without an amplifier. The output power was lowered
which then required us to add a amplifier in the intercoms. Sigtronics
can modify these intercoms for a cost of $30.00 plus shipping and
applicable taxes. You can send your intercom to Sigtronics 949 N
